Abstract

Considering the scant archaeological knowledge we have about the monasteries of the Catalan counties in the Carolingian era, the early medieval charters, despite their laconicism, constitute a basic sources to approach their material reality. Starting from this premise, in this paper, I will analyse all the references to the structure of these monasteries and their materiality that appear in the written sources of the 9^th and 10^th centuries. Doing so, I will provide new data to think about the conception of monastic centres in that period, their internal topography and the monastic ideal behind them.
